It began as a glaucoma medicine
The most effective lash-lengthening ingredients on the market were never designed for lashes. Bimatoprost, the molecule at the centre of the story, is a synthetic prostamide, closely related to the prostaglandin analogues and grouped with them first approved by regulators around the turn of the century as a glaucoma medicine, an eye drop that lowers the pressure inside the eye. It did that job well. It also did something its developers had not set out to do.
Patients using the drops kept reporting the same side effect: their eyelashes were growing longer, darker and denser. Rather than treat that as a problem, the manufacturer developed the same molecule into a prescription lash product, approved in 2008 for people with inadequate lashes. The lash-growth category, in other words, was born from a repurposed glaucoma drug, and much of what followed has been an attempt to capture that effect, with or without a prescription.
How a prostaglandin analogue became the lash-growth workhorse
Prostaglandins are signalling molecules the body makes naturally, involved in everything from inflammation to the hair cycle. A prostaglandin analogue is a lab-made molecule shaped to mimic them. In the context of lashes, these analogues are thought to act on the hair growth cycle, specifically to prolong the anagen, or active-growth, phase, so that more lashes spend more time growing before they shed. The result the wearer sees is length and density that ordinary cosmetics rarely match.
That potency is exactly why the ingredient class became the category's workhorse. A prostaglandin analogue produces a visible, fast change, and in a market that competes on before-and-after photographs, speed sells. The important distinction, and it is the one the rest of this article turns on, is that this is a physiological effect on the growth cycle itself. That is drug behaviour, not conditioning, and drug behaviour comes with a documented profile of side effects.
What the medical literature documents
The best-known concern is a change in eye colour. The medical literature and the drugs' own regulator-approved labels record that prostaglandin analogues can increase brown pigmentation of the iris, most noticeably in people whose eyes are a mix of colours. Regulators describe this iris darkening as likely to be permanent, it does not necessarily reverse when the product is stopped. For an ingredient used to lengthen lashes, a possibly permanent change to eye colour is a significant thing to weigh.
A second, more gradual effect is described in the ophthalmology literature as prostaglandin-associated periorbitopathy: a loss of the fat pads around the eye that can deepen the upper eyelid crease and give the eye a hollowed, or 'sunken', appearance. Unlike iris colour, this change is often reported to ease after the product is discontinued, though the literature notes it varies from person to person. Alongside these, clinicians have documented darkening of the eyelid skin and hyperaemia, a persistent redness of the eye surface. Much of this evidence comes from prescription glaucoma use, where doses and follow-up are closely recorded. The point is not to attach a number to any single effect, but to be honest that the class carries them.
The cosmetic grey area
There is a regulatory wrinkle worth understanding. Bimatoprost is a prescription drug. But related prostaglandin analogues, isopropyl cloprostenate is the one you will meet most often, have been used in serums sold on the open shelf as cosmetics, not medicines. That matters because a cosmetic is not assessed for this kind of physiological activity before it goes on sale. In the United States, regulators have treated several of these serums as unapproved drugs and written to their makers accordingly. The effect a shopper is buying may be pharmacological even when the label says 'cosmetic'.
How to spot one on an ingredient list
You do not need a chemistry degree to screen for these ingredients, you need a few names. On a full ingredient list, the analogues to look for include Isopropyl Cloprostenate, Bimatoprost, Isopropanol Phenyl-hydroxy-pentene Dihydroxy-cyclopentyl-heptenate, Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide and Methylamido Dihydro Noralfaprostal. The prescription glaucoma analogues, Latanoprost, Travoprost, Tafluprost, belong to the same family.
A useful shortcut is the fragment 'prost', which hides inside many of these names: clopro-stenate, bimato-prost, noralfa-prostal. It is not a perfect filter, some analogues are disguised in long, unfamiliar chemical names with no obvious tell, so the safer habit is to be wary of any long chemical name sitting high in the ingredient list, and to favour brands that state plainly they use none. The full label is the honest place to check; a brand that will not print one is answering the question by omission.
